Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej (now Onesti(born November 12, 1961 in Gheorghe Gheorghiu Dej, now One Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to get a flawless score of 10 during an Olympic event. Bela Karrolyi is an Romanian gymnastics instructor, who later became the coach for Comaneci who first came across Comaneci at the age of six. In 1969, she took part in the Romanian Junior Games where she placed 13th. She won in 1970. In 1972, during the communist nations' meet for juniors before the Olympics, she won 3 gold and silver medals. In 1973 and 1974 she won the overall junior champion. In her first international competition as a senior athlete in the year 1975, she beat out Russian Lyudmila Turishcheva who was a five-time European champion winning four gold and one silver medal. She took home the American Cup at the New York City Olympic Games and was the first female in history to dismount the bars in parallel with the double backward salto. She began her career as figure skater, performing alongside her sister Nina Wayne as part of the touring entertainment show known as Ice Capades. The show featured stage-moving ice-skating shows.
